The local police have arrested two Nigerians with 500-gm heroin from near the Shambhu border in Patiala.
The accused have been identified as Stanely and Festus Ugochukwu residing in New Delhi.
Addressing mediapersons, superintendent of police detective (SP-D) Paramjit Singh Goraya, on Friday, said both the accused were on their way from Delhi to Patiala and Ludhiana to deliver the contraband. He added that both knew each other but were travelling separately from Delhi. One was headed for Patiala and the other for Ludhiana.
Goraya said Stanely was arrested with 200-gm heroin when he stepped out of a bus at the Shambhu border on Thursday evening, as he had to change the bus for Patiala from there.
When the policemen at a nearby naka found him walking alone on the roadside in the evening hours, they stopped him and asked him to show his bag. On searching his bag, the cops recovered the contraband.
In another incident, a separate police party at a naka on National Highway-1 near the border stopped a car bearing a registration number of Delhi on Friday. The cops found a Nigerian, identified as Festus Ugochukwu, sitting on the back seat of the car along with others. He was carrying a bag. When the cops searched his bag, they found a packet containing 300-gm heroin in it.
Goraya said during the preliminary investigations, the police have found that the driver of the car Yogesh was not involved in the case. He was only ferrying passengers from Delhi to Amritsar.
He told the police that Festus had hired him for Ludhiana.
Goraya said it has also been found that both the accused, who knew each other, landed in India in November last year on business visa.
Goraya said that both were cloth merchants of Nigeria and had come to India in connection with their businesses. “But, they have taken to drug smuggling to make easy money,” Goraya added.
Goraya said that the police were also inquiring them about their local links.
He added that the police have registered a case under relevant sections under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Satenly was produced before a local court and has been remanded in two-day police custody and Festus would be produced in the court on Saturday.
